Artist | Hobbyist | Varied
Hello, I'm an artist who loves fantasy, especially dragons. I'm fine being called Masked or Lin, whichever takes your fancy. IRL I do have a gender of preference, but online I don't care what people think- if it's respectful and I can recognize it as a pronoun, I'm fine with it!

I usually post something new every 5 or 6 days, though my work and school schedule can cause delays in that schedule. I like to dabble into a lot of different kinds of art when I have the resources and utilities to, though most of my deviations here will involve either projects from my college classes or characters/places/ect. from my comic, Nest of Hearts, which is still in the world-building stages, so there won't be pages of it up for a while. Later on, I'll also post art from other stories that I'm working on, though NoH is my main focus.

I often take sculpture classes in the spring, so a lot of 3D art can pop up around that time, though currently I won't be posting much besides 2D art.
**Will yak your ear off about ceramics and stoneware clay if you let me.

A thing I want to say- DON"T give me Core membership. I actively do not want it! If I did, I would open commissions exactly for that. If someone does give it to me, I will attempt to cancel it as soon as I can, regardless of who gives it to me. It won't be personal! I just won't support Core, so be warned.

For anyone interested, I'm closed for trades, since I have a lot of owed art on hold to work on, which is what I'm focusing on for the time being. I have a few request slots open at the moment, but they're only for watchers, and those who are interested will have to search through my journals for them (hint, not all of my journals are featured). Otherwise, requests are for friends only. For more about my art status, look here, I keep it relatively up to date maskeddragonnamedlin.deviantar…

Feel free to message me, I may not get back to you immediately, but I strive to reply to all notes and comments. I'm friendly and like to meet people - however please don't if all you want is free art, as I said, I'm not open for requests from just anyone.
Interests
I wanted to post a journal so that the closed asks post won't be lingering around on my profile, so I figured it would be nice to talk about some of what I'm doing here. Due to Valentine's, work's picked up in hours, so my art is slowing some, so there may be delays in that front- hopefully things go back to normal afterwards, I like having more free time. After I finish the Hit and Miss mini series, which will have a total of four parts, I'll focus on owed art, including trades, requests, and that raffle (no I have not forgotten, I just procrastinate super bad TT-TT).

In a more exciting bit of news, I'm redesigning a few of my characters! I counted it out and of my 16 main ocs, there were 4 drakes, 1 wyvern, 1 lung (sorta three but really 1), 2 misc builds, ...and 8 drekis. Drekis are what I call "western" dragons (since many other dragons also originate from Europe), and in my headworld, drekis mostly originate from a volcanic area and possess fire/magma abilities. Several of my drekis have this ethnical origin, and a few others have it because of convergent evolution (such as with Fate), but 8 is too much- I'm pretty sure it happened because of a combination of laziness while designing them and a lack of development in world building- so expect to see some changes! My main focus will be on Gimrur, Zruimec, and Kihai, but I very well might do some touch ups on my other kids! If you have thoughts or questions on this, I'd be ecstatic to hear them, so feel welcomed to comment ;) (Wink)

Stop Leaving
First time with ice covered waters, it was a unique experience, but I like how it came out, and it's good to get digital art of my Krauyimer! Oceans like this are were these people originate from, though they have spread to almost every expanse of the sea, excluding the particularly warm waters. They most often travel in groups called pods (same as cetaceans) of five to twenty others (fin and mer alike), depending on factors such as age, group composition, and typical travel behavior, but rarely some feel compelled to splinter off and leave. Some depart to join new pods for personal reasons, others have a wanderlust that compels them to travel with a new, small pod of like minded mers and/or lif (when applicable), and a few seek solitude from people as a whole.

Mer often weave their attire out of tough, grass-like plants that grow underwater or from kinds of kelp treated in chemical in open air for some time, similar to how land peoples treat leather, but lasts underwater far better and poorly for prolonged exposure to open air. A version of shagreen is also commonly used, but mostly in armor and weapon grips, though some use it for straps to ensure their longevity. Attire for fashion is not nearly so pervasive as it is on land due to how most of what can be made at their technological creates a lot of drag (and thus little incentive to improve this), but small things like necklaces and arm bands are used and decorated with inks collected from octopi and other sea creatures. Utility items, like travel pouches and sheathes, are much more common, as their usefulness outweighs their cons. Bags are often loosely weaved so water travels through easier and reduces drag.

They have also found their own way to create tattoos, varying in technique based on which kind of mers are is question and the region. The source invention was not by Krauyimer, but they have adopted it into their cultures. It involves some sort of plant pulp, large shells, and pufferfish :') It hurts significantly more than tattooing as we know it. The left's tattoo is a symbol for the sun (a sign of life's phases to many) and the right's a fin within a crescent, variations of which are commonly symbolic for an esteemed hunter. Placement of tattoos is symbolic and often used to express what the individual is willing to endure- for example, the one with the sun tattoo has theirs at the base of their gills. This particular placement is uncommon because the water leaving the gills will often interfere with the ink setting in, meaning it often has to be done twice... it can take up to a week for the process to be done once, so it symbolizes a willingness to endure pain in particular.

Fun fact: Sharks are widely seen as a sacred animal, and when they are hunted, every part of them is used, from their skin to their cartilage skeleton.

Lost to the Current
Introducing another of my mer species, the alimer~ It's good to finally have art of mers up that is wholly new- and digital :) To distinguish different peoples in conversation (whether they're mer or cetacean), all the names for mer species (given by mers, at least) end in mer, all dolphin peoples end in lif, and whales end in bol- it varies language to language, but standard endings are almost universal. Merfolk and cetacean peoples often live in the same pods with a symbiotic relationship, a practice originally started by the nomadic Krauyimer/Niovmer.
Alimer, unlike Krauyimer, live in warm waters (often reefs) and are extremely sedementary. Their biology doesn't allow for effective heat regulation to survive colder temperatures, and they don't handle higher pressures particularly well. Their long and flexible tails are excellent for wrapping around things to hold on, however, this is precisely what makes them horrible swimmers- the long motions their tails make in attempt to swim both are ineffective and generate motion only in their tail sections, making swimming impractical as a means of transportation, thus sedementary life suits them better. Crafts and tools are a larger part of their lives than that of any other race of mer due to this disadvantage, and as such their dwellings are easy to spot but far less so to attack. They were one of the first mers to follow Niovmer in symbiosis with dolphins, as they help significantly with moving around.
Here, a strong current came through and dislodged a alimer youth, but thankfully, their cetacean friend has them covered, much to their parent's gratitude~

Fun fact: Alimer are also known as Dragon mer due to their extensive, thick plate scales, which provide them with high defensive capacitiy. They have few natural predators due to this, even among sharks.

Depth
I was rummaging through more mer sketches and I stumbled across this completed piece. I didn't post it when it was finished because I don't like posting art of my non-dragons by themselves, but since I'm posting mer art this month, I wanted to give it a chance to be seen :) It's actually an older piece than I initially thought, I finished it in June of 2016, wow, that was close to when I joined here.
This was a concept for mer armor, but I have since decided against this design, it's too vibrant for what they have to build with. They typically build with bones, stone, and sharkskin. As a species, these mer call themselves either Krauyimer or Niovmer, depending on their region, but other peoples have their own names for them as well. They can handle a wide range of water pressure, allowing them to live in shallows, short times on shore, and even in the depths of ocean abysses - though they are basically blind down there, so they only seldomly venture that deep, and only for distinct reasons.

Fun fact: Almost all mers have special scales on their hands that increase their grip, which helps them keep ahold of gear and fish in ocean currents.

I don't really have a main dragon, I just try alternating between my NoH characters since a lot of them are in need of more art, since there's sixteen of them and I don't have as much time to love them all properly :') I need art of all of them lol

I have been working on some refs, I've been refining some designs and want to have nice new refs for those since the last ones were made in 2016, ek

I only have two of those done so far, but feel free to look :> sta.sh/02fsmjoycvtm sta.sh/01jnpw17buun

Hey! I just want to stop by and say hello! Also, I remember our conversation when I first joined DA like 2 months ago (wow, it seems so long ago) and after effortly practicing, I finally managed to make my first artwork that actually came straight from my head and turned out decent! What do you think? It definitely doesn't compare to your talent, but I think it's okay.
